(piano, guitar, possibly vocal) was born at Cleveland, Bolivar County, Mississippi, on 3 October 1912, so he told Steve LaVere. His social security file gives his birth date as 3 October 1909, and his name as Levi Irvine. Although Steve La Vere’s interview indicated this was Cleveland, Ohio, it was almost certainly Cleveland, Mississippi. W. C. Clay taught him, despite being a younger man. L. V. later left Cleveland and worked with Frank Simpson, Jesse Sims and T-Bo Williams at Greenwood, Mississippi. He was also with Son House, Jake Douglas and another in Mississippi in the 1940’s. His nephew, G. P. Jackson, recalled him performing on the Miller Hill plantation at Dundee, Mississippi, when Jackson was 10, together with Joe Marshall and Black Albert. Irvine joined the Army at Dundee, Mississippi in 1942 and saw service in The Philippines. He was in the service for 2½ years. After the war he was at New York City for 1½ years, then Cleveland and then Greenwood, and was with Willie Love, Dudlow, Peck and W. C. Clay. He also worked with Wiley Gatlin at Tunica, and with Dr. Ross. His social security card, number 428-34-1768, was issued in Mississippi before 1951. He quit music in 1945. By 1972 he was living at 629 North 4th Street, Memphis, Tennessee – telephone (901) 525-0401, but had earlier lived at 325 Mill Street (corner North 7th Street), Memphis. He could be contacted in 1972 through his sister, Nancy Person – telephone (901) 774-9756. L. V. was reportedly known as “Henry” and “Tom”. He was residing at Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee 38107, when he died during February 1985.
