(term) is a motto appearing on numerous United States coins. Its first such use was on the United States 2-cent coin in 1864. It has been used continually on 1-cent coins since its appearance on the 1909 Lincoln penny. Compare Geeshie Wiley’s EAGLES ON A HALF, the lyrics to which refer to the Eagle on one side of the half dollar coin, and the motto “In God We Trust” on the other. From 1957 the motto also appeared on bank notes.
