(location) is the name applied to a section of New Orleans lying upriver from the Central Business District, and towards the river from the Garden District. It is generally regarded as being bounded by the Mississippi River on the south; by Louisiana Avenue on the east; by Magazine Street on the north, or Lake Pontchartrain side; and by Jackson Avenue on the west side. Although it reputedly originally took its name from the Irish immigrants who resided there, it later became the habitat of black servants to the wealthy inhabitants of the nearby Garden District. Champion Jack Dupree, for example, was reportedly born in the Irish Channel district.
